Interview with Bart de Zwart

We’re truly honored to have Bart in the CJ line-up this year. I have a feeling Chattajack was designed for this guy. Safe travels Bart and looking forward to hosting you in Tennessee!

What was life like for you 10 years ago?

Yes life before stand up, 10 years ago I had seen Laird on his first few waves in Hookup. We left Maui and sailed around the world during which I got a stand up board and started paddling.

Tell us about your day job

This year was kind a busy. My wife and I have a Stand up paddle/windsurf shop, I am buildng a house totally by myself and travel for races and expeditions. So no spare time this year.

When was your first SUP race and what was it like?

First race was the Maliko race on a 12’2 x26 Starboard. I fell off many times but still did well against the 16 footers in that race. I wanted more. a couple months later I met Svein( Starboard) and he made it possible to do a lot more racing and exploring.

It is race day – what do you do to get ready?

I eat right on the right moment , prepare my food and drinks fro the race and show up early. No Stress

Do you eat anything particular before a race?

Normally muesli with fruit (banana) 2-3 hrs before the race and then sport drink after that.

What are 3 things important to you in order to go into a race with confidence?

Be organized so there is no stress, be trained so you know you are strong, and eat right

What’s your most embarrassing race moment?

When I raced the open race in the BOP 2 years ago against 400 racers, I was in first place by a couple of minutes then I did 4 laps instead of 3 and came in very late.

At what moment did you know you were totally hooked on SUP?

The moment I had the board on my sibling trip around the world, I suddenly could ride waves further away, bigger and smaller than surfing and I could meet local village with simple means and connect so much easier.

What’s the first thing you do after you cross the finish line?

Put and my arms in the airing cry a loud aahuooohaa!

What are 2 things you’d like to improve upon this season?

That’s the the same every year. faster and keeping the speed longer

If you could have custom graphics done on your board without any limits what would you like?!

it would have a nice big chocolate cake on it.

Where’s your favorite place to paddle?

Outer reefs in Maui with high swell or Greenland between the Icebergs.

What’s the one piece of paddle gear you can’t live without?

the paddle , very import part of sup. but I also like my velocitek GPS to monitor speed and motivate during training

What do you do when you’re not paddling or working?

haven’t had that luxury much the last years, but probably a good movie or coming with my family

If you could be a rock star who would you be?

Jack Johnson, a good combination of rockstar, surfing and family life

If you could be any animal which one would you choose to be?

dolphin or whale
